What are these people playing?

We are playing a game called Amtgard. It is technically classified as a Boffer Larp. Now, you ask, what is a Boffer Larp? Yeah, I know, I'm so much help. Basically, its a game system that involves dressing up silly and hitting each other with foam sticks. Really. Basically its a a sport, martial art, arts & crafts, educational society, social group, and theater group all rolled into one. Its also anything you make of it. Amtgard is a medieval fantasy group, where we dress up in period fantasy clothing, choose classes (like archer, or wizard) to play, practice our skills at swordplay, do arts and crafts, hang out with other people with like interest, sing, dance, above all, have fun.

 

Why are they dressed so weird?

Amtgard is a fantasy game, in order to play, you will need to soon have a set of garb, or clothing that is period for medieval or medieval fantasy time period. Don't worry, we can help teach you how to make some, or point you in the right direction towards getting some made. There will be included in this CD a slew of how-tos to help you make some garb for very little money, or skill for that matter.

 

What are they hitting each other with?

Our weapons are essentially foam covering a core, foam being at least 2.5 inches wide at any end as to prevent injury. Core being from pvc piping, bamboo, carbon fiber golf shafts (without the head) or fiberglass. Foam being blue camp pad, available from walmart, or funoodle, or pipe insulation. These weapons are checked for safety before they ever reach the field, to ensure safety.

 

How much does it cost?

Nada. Nothing at all to play. You can come out to our park every Sunday and Monday and not spend a dime. We are cool that way. If you wish to vote in our elections, or vote towards any of our decisions, you must be dues paid, however, which is 6 dollars every 6 months.

 

Who can play?

Anyone. Well, check that, anyone above the age of 14, unless granted special permission by our monarch (person in charge) and parental permission. Anyone under the age of 18 we ask to have your parents sign your waiver as well.

 

How do I sign up?

Chances are, you already have. You must have a legal waiver signed in order to participate in combat and if you are 18, you must have it signed by a parent or legal guardian. DOWNLOAD WAIVER HERE (word file)

 

How do I play?

First, get a copy of the rule book

Second, develop a persona and a persona history. Think of a name, give your character some background.

Third, make a costume for yourself that is fitting to your persona.

Fourth, fill out a membership form and waiver and turning them in to the Prime Minister. Minors must have their waivers signed by their parents or legal guardians. Minors under the age of 14 may not participate in combat without special permission from the Monarch.
