The art of describing heraldry is called blazonry.
It may seem confusing at first, but in all reality it is able to depict
a complete verbal picture of the armorial. First, one must learn the
order of importance in describing a shield.
- First, describe the color of the shield, the background. Include
any divisions, which are how
the shield is divided up.
- Second, describe the ordinary,
which are the major armorial geometrical charges.
- Third, The principal charges, the device on the shield or other
item, on the field, followed by any lesser charge.
- Fourth, Any changes on the ordinary.
- Fifth, Any sub-ordinares.
- Sixth, Any charges on the sub-ordinares.
Once the terms are learnt, its a fairly simple task to accurately describe
an armorial. See the Glossary for a more
complete list of blazonry terms.
